In NYC, a haircut costs $100 and takes 3 weeks to book. In Seoul, a haircut costs $20 (or less), includes a head massage, and makes you look like a K-Drama star.
Korean hair technology is years ahead of the rest of the world. They have perms for everything—roots, bangs, and even the sides of your head.
But be careful with the menu. If you order “Magic Straight” thinking it will give you magical volume like a Disney princess, you are in for a shock.
Welcome to Level 1. Let me tell you how I walked in wanting to look like Jennie from Blackpink and walked out looking like a wet dog.

The Level 1 Logs: The “Magic” Mistake
Flashback: 3 years ago. Hongdae Hair Salon.
I wanted a makeover. I saw “Magic Straight Perm” on the price list. I thought: “Magic? That sounds amazing! I want magical hair!” I told the stylist, “Please give me Magic!”
She asked, “Are you sure? Your hair is already kind of straight.” I nodded confidently. “Yes! Maximum Magic, please!”
Two hours later, I looked in the mirror. My hair was … flat. Dead flat. It was plastered to my skull. I had zero volume. I looked like I had just emerged from a swimming pool. I realized too late: In Korea, “Magic” means “Chemical Straightening.”
Enter “Ssam” (The Style Director)
I ran to Ssam wearing a beanie hat. “Ssam, I ruined my hair. I asked for Magic, but I look like a wet seaweed!”
Ssam tried not to laugh (he failed). “Alice, ‘Magic’ is for frizzy hair. If you wanted volume, you should have asked for a C-Curl or S-Curl.”
He explained the K-Hair Vocabulary: “Korean perms are like geometry. You need to know your shapes.”
Level 3 Wisdom: Decoding the Salon Menu
Don’t guess the English translation. Use Ssam’s cheat sheet.
1. The Perm Menu (It’s Geometry)
- Magic Straight (매직): Makes curly/frizzy hair pin-straight. Avoid if you have thin hair.
- C-Curl / S-Curl (C컬 / S컬):
- C-Curl: The ends curve in (Bob style). Very popular and natural.
- S-Curl: Wavy, romantic goddess hair.
- Root Perm (뿌리펌): Adds volume ONLY to the roots. (Highly recommended for flat hair).
2. The “Down Perm” (For Men / Short Hair)
If you are a guy, you MUST know this. Korean men hate it when the hair on the sides sticks out like a hedgehog.
- The Solution: Down Perm (다운펌). It uses chemicals to flatten the side hair against the head. It makes your face look smaller and sharper.
3. The Booking Hack (Naver is King)
Do not just walk in. You will pay full price.
- Download: Naver Map app.
- Search: “Hair Salon” (미용실) near me.
- Book: Use N-Booking (Naver Booking). First-time visitors often get 20~30% discounts. Plus, you can check the stylist’s portfolio photos so you don’t pick a rookie.

Alice’s Bottom Line: Photo > Language
Even if you speak perfect Korean, describing hair is hard. Bring a photo. Don’t be shy to show a picture of a K-Pop idol. The stylist knows you don’t look like Jennie. They just need to see the hair shape.
Show the photo, say “Igeo juseyo” (This please), and enjoy the head massage.
Survival Hangul: At the Salon
- “다듬어만 주세요. (Da-deum-eo-man juseyo.)”
- Meaning: “Just a trim, please.” (Don’t cut too much).
- “숱 치지 마세요. (Sut chi-ji maseyo.)”
- Meaning: “Don’t thin out my hair.” (Important if you want thick hair).
- “사진처럼 해주세요. (Sajin-cheoreom hae-juseyo.)”
- Meaning: “Please make it like this photo.”
